~ Providing
Quality Garden Seeds
Since 1993 ~
~
Below is a basic climate
zone map and minimum temperatures table for the United States. Canadian
customers can determine their zone from the temperatures table or by viewing
the Agi-Canada's
Zone map.
Please note that we have
indicated the coldest zone the tree will normally flourish in after each
tree variety listed on our seed
catalog page. If you live in a colder zone than that listed for
the tree seed you are interested in you should be aware of the fact
that small pockets of warmer zones often exist within your zone-these are
called "micro-climates" and can be used to advantage-they are often warmer
by one full zone. They occur for a number of reasons. Your garden may be
sheltered by a hill (or even large trees) from the prevailing winds, you
may be situated on a south facing hill or be influenced by the moderating
effects of a large body of water close by. If your garden is in a town
or city you should find average temperatures to be usually warmer by quite
a few degrees than the surrounding countryside. These considerations can
help when determining what trees you may have success with in your garden
when contemplating a borderline hardy variety.
It should also be noted
that the trees you raise from seeds
seem to adapt to colder climate zones somewhat better than nursery purchased
trees imported from a warmer zone.
A note on zones:
If, for instance, a variety is listed as being cold hardy to Z 4 (the
coldest zone in which it will normally flourish) than generally speaking
it can also be grown successfully in the next few warmer zones. However,
success in zones that are more extreme in their climate such as the more
extreme parts of Zones 8, 9 and 10 often require you to provide
extra consideration whereby extremes in drought and heat can be reduced
or ameliorated by extra waterings, judicial placement for exposure, partial
shade provision, soil mulching for longer moisture retention and protection
from heat, the amending of soils with organic matter for tilth and better
moisture retention (always a good measure anyway), etc. Extra care in the
more extreme zones is sometimes better provided for by growing the tree
in a large pot or garden tub where it can be moved at will and situated
for better effect or protection, etc.
It is our objective to offer quality seeds for
ornamental trees that can be expected to do
well across most of North America's temperate
gardens.
